The smallest and remotest of Australian states, Tasmania is separated from the mainland by the 120 mile wide Bass Strait, it has a temperate climate, rugged mountains, cool forests and national parks.
Steeped in a history of penal colonies, bloody battles between European settlers and the natives, Tasmania had a bleak beginning to its life.
Today, farming, forestry and tourism are the main activities on the island.
